Position Summary

The Assistant Director is responsible for all aspects of public service within the Branch Libraries.  The standard for service, programs, and materials shall be aligned with the District’s mission statement and core values.

The Assistant Director generally receives assignments in terms of broad objectives related to the District’s short-term and long range planning and development.

Responsibilities

  1. Oversee and direct overall operations of the branch libraries; ensures general operation of the libraries are aligned with the District’s mission and core values.
  2. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, other community agencies and the public.
  3. Development of policies and procedures relative to the delivery of services to the public through our branches.
  4. Work closely with branch managers to ensure customer service issues are resolved in a timely and consistent manner.  Offer  policy interpretation to the branches for providing consistent service standards.
  5. Serve as the Administrator in Chargeof daily operations in the Director’s absence.
  6.  Assist the Director with long range planning; including assessment and development of programs, services, and facilities.
  7. Attend library board meetings and provide periodic reports as requested.

Duties

  1. Supervise branch managers and assigned department managers.  Provide professional development opportunities for branch or department managers.  Conduct annual evaluations for all direct reports.   Monitor employee development opportunities and ensure implementation of annual evaluations for all branches and assigned departments.
  2. Serve as a liaison between branch or assigned department managers and the Library Director.
  3. Plan, organize, and supervise the implementation of public services including collection development and program coordination for adult services.
  4. Support system-wide safety initiatives by scheduling safety training sessions in the branches.  Review Incident Reports and take preventative actions to reduce or eliminate injuries in the branches.   Assist Branch Manager with emergency situations and see that all documentation related to the incident is completed and properly filed.
  5. Participate in the overall annual budget process for programs and services, training,  and library personnel.
  6. Be a member of and participate in professional organizations, such as, ALA, PLA, and MLA to remain familiar with current topics, issues and trends in public libraries.

  2. Ability to engage various library constituencies to assess their interests and needs for future development and implementation of library programs and services.
  3. Ability to think analytically and to develop new or revised systems, procedures,  and work flow
  4. Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment
  5. Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and present ideas clearly and concisely in written and oral form
  6. Ability to make administrative decisions, interpret policies, and supervise staff

Essential Physical Abilities

  1. Sufficient personal mobility to monitor, supervise, and perform assigned library operations, and to attend meetings at various locations. 
  2. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing to communicate well with employees and customers.
  3. Sufficient vision to produce and review a wide variety of library materials, written correspondence, reports and related materials in both electronic and hard copy form.

Education and Experience

A master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited program, MBA, MPA, or master’s in non-profit administration plus eight years professional experience with a minimum of four years in an administrative capacity.

Transfer and Promotion

Candidates possessing a second master’s approved by the Director may be appointed at Salary Track L.
